Youth Boating Program Rules
Lake Merritt is the largest man-made saltwater tidal lake in the United States and we are proud of our urban boating center located in Lakeside Park. Youth and Community Boating programs offer an entry point for students to explore the wonders of the Bay Area’s greatest resource. We would like to invite you to sail, kayak, canoe, or row at the lake.

Lake Merritt Boating Center Summer Camps are held at 568 Bellevue Avenue, Oakland, California 94610. All camps held Monday through Friday from 9:00 am ~ 3:30 pm.

Extended Care
Available at the Lake Merritt Boating Center for $10 per day. Extended care is not available for the Estuary classes. Please call at least one week in advance to register.

Before Care   7:30 am ~ 9:00 am
After Care      3:30 pm ~ 6:00 pm

Fee Waiver
A limited number of scholarships are available for Oakland Residents who qualify. Fee waivers are available for those Oakland Residents with financial needs. Please contact the Lake Merritt Boating Center to verify if you quality or for an application at (510) 238-2196.

California Canoe & Kayak and the ‘Race for Treasure’ raise funds annually to provide scholarships so that Oakland youth have the opportunity to enjoy boating and the summer on Lake Merritt.

Refund & Transfer Policy
Refunds or transfers will only be processed for requests made 10 days in advance of the first class; $10 processing fee.

Special Needs
Persons with special needs are encouraged to attend programs. Please call to make arrangements prior to attending your first class.

Swim Test
Before classes begin, all students are required to pass a swimming competency test offered at Oakland public pools or any pool of your choice. Students must demonstrate the ability to swim 75 feet and float or tread water for five minutes. A personal flotation device may be used in the five-minute float. A valid Red Cross Swimmer, Intermediate Swimmer, Lifesaving or Basic Sailing Card will be accepted in lieu of the swim test.
